SCI 3

The third SCI in 2005 focused on those who had extensive digital experience in the humanities and attempted to address the challenge of sustainability by developing institutional strategies that would support on-going digital scholarship. Teams from Emory University, Indiana University, Wheaton College (MA), and U.Va, as well as invited experts in digital scholarship and the national cyber-infrastructure initiative, assembled at the University of Virginia. Teams exchanged and discussed information about all aspects of the digital initiatives in their areas. They also greatly benefited from long-term experience at other institutions such as the University of Michigan Library Scholarly publishing program and the University of Nebraska´s Center for Digital Research in the Humanities. By the close of this Institute, participants had begun to apply this learning to their own projects and particular institutional settings. For example, the team from Indiana University resolved to use the work of an institutional taskforce on cyber-infrastructure at IU and the SCI discussions as a catalyst to bring humanists and library representation to the table at future institutional discussions. Similarly, the Emory University team was inspired by the discussions to return to their institution resolved to actively coordinate the disparate digital programs on their campus in order to raise the visibility of all. All participants gained new insight into the challenges and importance of sustainability and the role of the larger institution in their individual efforts.
