SCI 2 Ongoing Activities

Practical Ethics (2004)

In March 2006, UVa convened a meeting of representatives of the teams who participated at SCI 2 (Virginia, Minnesota, Indiana, Duke) as well as additional teams that had become involved in the discussions following SCI 2. Great interest in moving forward with the creation of a digital resource for the benefit of the entire scholarly community persisted. During the course of several follow-up conference calls among the group and with the SCI team, scholarly leadership emerged from Jeffrey Kahn of Minnesota. Under Professor Kahn’s leadership, with the support of the University of Minnesota Libraries, the group prepared a proposal for EthicShare, a sustainable online environment for the practical ethics community that employs content and tools to build community, fuel scholarship, and stimulate engagement. The SCI team requested a meeting with Mellon and the proposal’s principals, to review a draft of the proposal and potential funding sources. It was determined that remaining monies from SCI 1-3 could be utilized for this purpose and that the Minnesota leaders consult with the SCI team on final development of a planning proposal. Minnesota submitted this proposal to CLIR in September 2006, with funding following in December 2006 for a January 2007 project start-up.
